Feline Anxiety

The cats are a tad bit concerned about all this banging and other loud noise and disruption in the kitchen....

Kitchen Makeover - Day 2

Now another base cabinet is gone and a lot more of the wall is cleared away. Woohoo!!!!

Kitchen Makeover - Day 1

And so it begins....

All of the wall cabinets are down, and the base cabinet by the east wall which reveals our first unexpected obstacle. There is a plumbing exhaust pipe that runs from the east/bathroom wall through the cabinets over to the kitchen sink plumbing. We need the pipe, so we have to figure out the best way to work around it.

There is also at least one copper pipe that needs to be replaced due to rust. But nothing else major here. Otherwise, as expected we are revealing regular studs on the two interior walls and concrete/brick on the two exterior walls (which of course are the two walls we will be hanging cabinets on).

Kitchen Makeover - Before

The kitchen makeover started on March 31. Here are the "before" pictures from March 30 after I got all the "crap" out of there but before Dan (our friend/contractor) got started on the demo.

The south wall with our weird little closet that must have once been a door heading to the back yard (which is now completely filled up with a garage so this door was covered over) and the funky little shelf-closet.

The southwest corner with our cruddy old range and the beginning of our mismatched cabinets.

The sink cabinet on our west wall is a classic old sixties-style metal cabinet--kind of cool but the only metal cabinet of the bunch. And I can't tell you how much I HATE our single basin porcelain sink. I can't wait for the stainless steel double basin sink that is headed our way!

The northwest corner and the north wall (the bathroom is on the other side of this wall).

The east wall with our pantry (which is about the only thing in the kitchen that is staying intact). The second bedroom (currently the "office" is on the other side of this wall.

Otis (f/k/a Bartok)

Here are a couple of pictures of our "new" kitten. Well, he's more than 6 months old now and almost full-cat sized, but these pictures at least are from when he was brand new. I know this is true of all kittens, but boy, is he a bundle of personality.

We were struggling with his name for quite a while. Originally it was Bartok. More for the sidekick fruit bat from Anastasia than for the Hungarian composer. But it just wasn't sticking. Something about the name just didn't flow off the tongue. We found ourselves calling him "kitten" all the time instead. I had already tried to think of a suitable name of a male character from Beverly Cleary's children's books (to fit in with our other cats Beezus and Ramona), but could only think of Henry Huggins, which I just didn't find charming enough for this cutie. Luckily, our friend Maureen came through by remembering good old Otis Spofford! And this cat is definitely an Otis.
